Battens collectively refer to all the battens arranged on a roof. Depending on the build-up, they comprise transverse supporting battens for the covering and longitudinal counter-battens for load transfer and rear ventilation.
What are battens? Function and classification
The battens form the geometric and load-bearing supporting structure for roofing materials. They determine the covering length, row spacing and secure fixing of the roof skin.
Practical applications
After checking the underlay and rafter positions, counter-battens and roof battens are aligned, spaced out and fixed. Spacing follows the specific covering material and roof geometry.
Build-up and system variants
A distinction is made between supporting, counter, additional and, where applicable, auxiliary battens. Material, cross-section and fixing depend on the system and loads.
What should be considered in practice?
The collective term battens is not synonymous with an individual roof batten. Generalised spacings or cross-sections without reference to span, covering and technical rules should be avoided.
