A roof-to-wall junction connects a roof surface to a rising wall in a watertight way. It directs water out of the joint and connects the roof covering or waterproofing to the component using junction flashing, a connecting membrane or liquid-applied resin.
What is a roof-to-wall junction? Function and classification
The junction must accommodate movement between roof and wall and prevent water from getting behind the water-carrying layer.
Practical applications
The waterproofing or covering is turned up the wall to a sufficient height, secured mechanically or by bonding and protected by capping or counterflashing. Corners and ends require their own details.
Types and structural variants
Side and upper junctions, one- or two-piece metal solutions and liquid or membrane systems are possible. The façade and substrate determine the fixing.
What should you watch out for in practice?
A sealant joint alone is rarely a durable main junction. Upstand height, substrate, movement accommodation and protection against water getting behind the system must be resolved through construction details.
